Barry Hackshaw, MD, is a Cardiologist who
earned his medical degree in 1974 from Wake Forest
University in North Carolina. He completed a fellowship in Cardiology at the North Carolina Baptist
Hospital medical center in Winston-Salem for ten years and as Associate Chief of Staff he started their
heart transplant program. In 1989, Dr. Hackshaw relocated to Rancho Mirage, CA and joined Desert
Cardiology Consultants Medical Group. He currently serves as President of the group. Dr. Hackshaw is
the Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at Eisenhower Medical Center and serves as
President of the local chapter of the American Heart Association.


Donald Hillebrand, MD, is a Hepatologist and the Medical Director of Liver Transplantation at the Scripps Center
for Organ & Cell Transplantation in La Jolla, CA. He is a Member of the American Association for the Study
of Liver Diseases, the American Society of Transplant Physicians, the American College of Gastroenterology
and many others as well as a member of the FAIR Foundation Board of Directors. While at his previous position
as Medical Director of Liver Transplant at the Loma Linda Medical Center, Dr. Hillebrand oversaw the care of
our Founder, Dr. Darling, and successfully ushered Dr. Darling through hepatitis C induced liver cancer,
coma and three liver transplants.


Rodolfo Batarse, MD, is a Palm Springs, CA Nephrologist practicing at Desert Nephrology Medical Group who
spoke on managing diabetes and kidney disease. Prior to moving to Palm Springs, Dr. Batarse was Associate
Medical Director of Kidney and Pancreas Transplantation and the director of all the long term kidney
transplant clinics for the University of California San Diego (UCSD) Medical Center and the UCSD Center
for Transplantation. He continues his work there as a volunteer Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine.


Tom Perkin is the President of Supplement Professors Insurance Services, an independent insurance brokerage

Scott Aaronson, MD is a board certified Plastic and Reconstructive Plastic Surgeon who has been enhancing the beauty of Coachella Valley, California (Palm Springs, Palm Desert, Indian Wells, etc.) citizens since 1984, indeed, twenty five years of excellent care to patients. He is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and the California Society of Plastic Surgeons. Dr. Aaronson spoke about New and Innovative Techniques in Plastic Surgery.


Michael Lovy, MD, is a rheumatologist in Palm Springs specializing in the treatment of arthritic disorders,
osteoporosis and gout.  Prior to settling in the Coachella Valley he had a private practice in Tacoma Washington
for 28 years and was a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Washington. Without
doubt, Dr. Lovy's presentation was the hit of the day with a sense of humor second to none.


Bill LaTour is a Loma Linda attorney specializing in social security Social security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) matters and he has helped many patients in our support group obtain the SS coverage and many months of back pay they had previously been denied. There is no upfront fee to use Bill’s services; he is only compensated after an award is granted to the claimant.


Robert Huang, MD, is Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at UC San Diego and works at the medical center
as the solid organ transplant infectious disease specialist.  He also is an Assistant Director of the clinical
microbiology lab and Director of the General Infectious Disease Clinic at the University of California San
Diego Hillcrest Medical Center. Dr. Huang updated the audience on H1N1 influenza and
general infection prevention.


Dr. Darling is assisted by the co-moderator of our FAIR Foundation Liver Disease & Transplant Support Group,
liver-transplant recipient, Jack Burke, in handing out thirty door prizes, including many wonderful dinner and
gift baskets from Costco, etc.
