The following information was obtained from the scientific registry at
www.ustransplant.org.
At ustransplant.org
you can find extensive
information/data on every transplant center in
the USA, including
survival rates.
The table below contains the
2006 Average Liver Transplant Match MELD
Scores for Ages 11 and Older, for every OPO in the USA
(Match MELD means
after factoring in if a patient has a condition,
e.g. primary liver cancer, which boosts the score.)
MELD scores can range from 6 to 40, higher = sicker. For example, if you
are a 6
you can live
for
years whereas if 40, you have, on average, 90 days to live.
Overview of MELD from the United Network for Organ Sharing
Calculate your MELD score if age 12 or over. You must have the
following results from
your blood tests: total bilirubin, INR and creatinine. If calculating
for a patient younger than
12, click
here. For that child's score, you will need bilirubin, INR and
albumin values.
As an example of the significance of this table, a
person in a state at a facility that is
transplanting at
a MELD of 21 will, on average, be transplanted years sooner than the
person at a center
transplanting at much higher scores, such as MELD 30. You can co-list
at
two different
transplant centers if they are in two different organ procurement
regions (OPO's).
This difference in time to transplant is not a reflection on any
transplant center's capabilities,
it is simply the way the system is presently set up by those who oversee
our transplant
system (UNOS).
TO DETERMINE THE FASTEST TRANSPLANTING LOCATIONS TO LIST FOR LIVER
TRANSPLANT, USE THIS TABLE BELOW IN CONJUNCTION WITH
THIS
LIST OF
All Organ Procurement
Organizations and the states/counties they serve. Note in
the above link that some
OPO's
serve two states so check the OPO link above for what
state/county you need.
