Points of Interest on NIH Research Allocations per 2004 budget, updated 12/01/03

AIDS deaths from CDC estimated at 16,371 in 2002

Cardiovascular Disease kills 950,000 every year, yet receives over 1/2 Billion less than AIDS

The NIH is spending $3,053 on each citizen estimated as having HIV/AIDS

Diabetes kills more Americans than AIDS and breast cancer combined, yet the NIH spends only $70 on each  diabetic

Alzheimer's Disease kills 3.3 times more than AIDS, yet the NIH spends only $161 on each patient with Alzheimer's Disease

Prostate cancer kills 2 times more than AIDS, yet the NIH spends only $145 on each patient with prostate disease

Hepatitis C (HCV) kills 12,000, yet the NIH spends only $20 on each hepatitis C patient

The flu (influenza) on average, now kills almost 2+ times more than AIDS

Parkinson's Disease death rate similar to AIDS yet the NIH spends $398 on each pt.

West Nile Virus cases in 2003: 8,567 with 199 deaths. West Nile Virus research allocation is $4,669 per pt.

FAIR NEWSLETTER

FAIR IS TAX-EXEMPT

We are pleased to announce that the FAIR Foundation is now under the umbrella of a 501(c)(3) organization known as a Community Foundation, specifically the Desert Community Foundation (DCF) located in Palm Desert, CA. There are hundreds of Community Foundations throughout the USA and their charitable activities may be for their local communities, statewide or nationally. We are proud of our association with DCF. Donations to the FAIR Foundation are now tax-exempt. You may read more about Community Foundations HERE

New Statistics on AIDS

The Fair Foundation is now utilizing "estimated" deaths when analyzing AIDS deaths. This gives a more accurate picture because not all fifty states report AIDS deaths to the CDC. The disproportionate funding is still dramatic and we recommend that you take a moment to view the charts HERE and the supporting facts HERE and adjust your statements regarding AIDS funding to reflect the new figures. The graphic charts are another example of FAIR member activism as these beautiful visual presentations would not have been possible without the technical help of our fellow member James M. Ward Captain, SC, USNR (Ret.)

Traveling with FAIR

FAIR Founder, Dr. Richard Darling, DDS, has been traveling, giving speeches and presentations to educate that the National Institutes of Health must change its system of allocations so that they are without favoritism towards AIDS and that they are FAIR and equitable for all diseases, including HIV/AIDS. You may follow Dr. Darling in his travels to Senator Feinstein's office, Congressman Cunningham's office, the Alzheimer's Association (in D.C. & CA) and to the public in New Mexico HERE

Diseases with Low Mortality Rates

It is vitally important to remember and educate that although the FAIR Foundation's goal is the proration of NIH research monies based on a disease's mortality rate, FAIR specifically states in its secondary factors link HERE that illnesses that don't have high mortality rates, but do cause great suffering, such as multiple sclerosis, lupus, progeria, spinal cord injury, sickle cell disease, fibromyalgia, etc., will also receive increased research funds with proration.

Recognition

The National Association of Social Workers (NASW), Inland Empire Unit F, recognized FAIR Founder, Dr. Richard Darling, DDS, as the Public Citizen of the Year for his work with his support group's transplant patients, the FAIR Foundation and his book, ComaLife, which has given hope to many who are ill. The Inland Empire Unit is the 2nd largest NASW Unit in California and represents Orange, Riverside and San Bernadino Counties.

Focus Disease: Cardiovascular Disease
(Heart Disease and Stroke)

  • Cardiovascular Disease is fatal: About 950,000 Americans die of heart disease and stroke each year, which amounts to one death every 33 seconds. That is 57 times the number reported for HIV/AIDS

  • Cardiovascular Disease is serious: Heart disease and stroke  account for 40% of all deaths in the USA and are the leading cause of deaths for both men and women

  • Cardiovascular Disease Cost to Society: The cost of heart disease and stroke in the United States is projected to be $351 billion in 2003, including health care expenditures and lost productivity from death and disability.

  • Cardiovascular Disease is Prevalent: the CDC estimates that there are 61 million Americans living with heart disease and stroke as compared to 950,000 with HIV/AIDS.

  • Cardiovascular Disease and race: Afro-Americans are 10% (males) to 16% (females) more likely to have heart disease and stroke than Caucasians or Mexican-Americans

  • Fairness? The NIH is spending only $36 on each patient with Cardiovascular Disease  in research in 2003 versus $3,053 on each patient who has been identified as having AIDS

  • Cardiovascular Disease and all other diseases except HIV/AIDS would receive larger research allocations under the FAIR Foundation's policy.

FAIR Mission Statement: The NIH shall use a disease’s mortality rate as the initial allocation factor. If you have a disease that is killing the most Americans, it shall receive the largest allocation, if it is killing the second largest number, it shall receive the second largest research funding and so on. Secondary factors insure diseases with lower mortality rates but that produce great suffering shall also receive increased research funding. See HERE

and please remember....

FAIR is an acronym for Fair Allocations In Research. FAIR is fair.
